‼️Air Sierra Leone’s Boeing 737 Max8 Departs Gatwick on Historic Journey to Freetown

By Amin Kef (Ranger)

In a historic milestone for Sierra Leone’s aviation industry, Air Sierra Leone officially departed Gatwick International Airport in London for Freetown International Airport on Saturday, 26th April 2025, at approximately 4:00 a.m. UK time.

The airline’s Boeing 737 Max8 embarked on its inaugural direct flight to Sierra Leone, carrying members of the Sierra Leonean diaspora community in the UK, along with other international guests. This significant event marks the end of a more than decade-long absence of direct flights between Sierra Leone and the United Kingdom, signaling Sierra Leone’s return to the global aviation map.

Air Sierra Leone, the national flag carrier, had earlier launched operations in January 2025, with its maiden flight connecting Freetown to Lagos, Nigeria. The addition of a direct London–Freetown route now cements the airline’s expanding international presence and reaffirms Sierra Leone’s commitment to strengthening global ties.

The revival of Sierra Leone’s aviation sector has been largely attributed to the dynamic leadership of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), under the stewardship of Director General Madam Musayeroh Barrie. Over the past year, the SLCAA has achieved significant progress in critical areas, including safety compliance, capacity building, and international collaboration. These advancements are positioning Sierra Leone as an emerging hub in the regional and global aviation landscape.

With a clear vision and strategic leadership, the SLCAA’s achievements have paved the way for greater national and international connectivity. As Sierra Leone continues to invest in its aviation infrastructure, it is poised to attract further investment, create employment opportunities, and stimulate economic growth.

The successful launch of Air Sierra Leone’s direct UK service is not just a win for the airline but a proud moment for all Sierra Leoneans. It reflects the country’s rising ambitions and its readiness to embrace a future of expanded international engagement.

Congratulations to Sierra Leone!
