Unity Agreement Produces 68 Recommendations, President Bio Ensures People’s Involvement in Decision-Making

By Mohamed Kamara

Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Minister of Information and Civic Education, Mr. Chernor A. Bah, announced that the Tripartite Recommendations have been officially handed over to President Julius Maada Bio. The handover was conducted by Chief Minister David Moninah Sengeh, representing the government, and Dr. Samura Kamara, representing the All People’s Congress Party (APC), during a ceremony at State House.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, Minister Bah revealed that the recommendations will be subject to parliamentary approval and a nationwide referendum. He clarified that not all recommendations were included, with some being mutually agreed upon by representatives from both the APC and the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), while others were excluded.

Citizens who spoke to this medium expressed surprise and approval at the President’s decision not to unilaterally implement the recommendations using his executive power. Instead, they saw the move as a commitment to ensuring peace and national cohesion. Many praised Dr. Samura Kamara, the former APC flagbearer, for his significant role in presenting the recommendations and his symbolic handshake with President Bio, signaling a move away from divisive rhetoric and towards unity.

The 68 recommendations mark a pivotal step in Sierra Leone’s journey towards national reconciliation, highlighting the collaborative efforts of both major political parties. The President’s decision to involve the public in the final decision-making process underscores his dedication to democratic principles and the will of the people.
