SLPP Faces Disruption from Premature 2028 Flagbearer Speculation

By Mohamed Kamara

Despite repeated appeals from the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) leadership for restraint, social media continues to buzz with speculation about potential candidates for the party’s 2028 flagbearer position. The rise in premature declarations is creating turmoil within the party, even though the next presidential election is still four years away.

An SLPP executive member, who requested anonymity, expressed frustration over the current trend. “Our party operates under a constitution that defines clear rules for succession,” the source said. “It’s troubling to see such desperation so early. This is a case of constitutional lawlessness. Instead of rallying behind President Bio’s five-point agenda, some members are distracting the public from current priorities.”

The executive highlighted the need for unity within the party, emphasizing that decisions regarding President Bio’s successor will be governed by the SLPP Constitution. “The radical divisions within the party before the 2018 elections, particularly between the KKY Movement and Paopa factions, led to a significant review of our constitution. This was done to prevent further internal conflicts,” he added.

The current constitution places strong emphasis on maintaining political order and preventing disorderly conduct. Recent actions, such as the suspension and expulsion of Chief Kadiru Kaikai, underscore the party’s commitment to upholding these standards. The executive stressed that the SLPP remains committed to high moral standards and will not tolerate political fanaticism that could lead to chaos.
