Political Turmoil Surrounds Sierra Leone Drivers Union Elections Amid Controversy

By Mohamed Kamara

Members of the Sierra Leone Drivers Union are expressing deep concern over the repeated postponements of their scheduled elections, which were due to take place over 45 days ago in Freetown. Sources from the Union Headquarters at Texaco Kissy reveal that the outgoing President, Mr. A. Bah, has taken unilateral action to nominate another Bah as his successor, who resides in Bo Town. This move has sparked widespread opposition among union members, who believe that all eligible candidates should have the right to contest the presidency.

Members accuse Mr. Bah of making this nomination out of fear that a successor could investigate him regarding the union’s financial dealings. Concerns have also been raised about the influence of high-profile politicians, who appear to be divided over the selection of the union’s leadership. Some union members advocate for a candidate free from political affiliations, while others insist that the next president must be a strong supporter of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party.

Reports indicate that potential candidates are actively seeking support from various ministers within the Bio Administration. Mr. Osman Mansaray, a representative from the Kissi Community in Kailahun, claims that the Drivers Union’s bank account holds millions of Leones across the five regions of the country. He, along with other members, insists that financial records at the Union’s office are inaccurate and that significant amounts of money have been withdrawn from the account following news of the upcoming elections.

The ongoing political maneuvering and uncertainty surrounding the union’s elections have raised alarms among the membership, highlighting a growing discontent with the current leadership and calls for transparency in the electoral process.
