A Milestone in Journalism: The Watch Honored by President Bio for MCC Headline

President Bio emphasizes the importance of unity and collaboration for the nation’s progress

The President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Dr. Julius Maada Bio, on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, acknowledged The Watch newspaper for its positive portrayal of the country during his address at the Presidential Media Cocktail in Freetown.

In his speech, President Bio specifically praised The Watch for its headline on the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact, describing it as the best coverage of the historic achievement. The headline, “MCC Compact: A Historic Win for All Sierra Leoneans,” resonated with the President as a significant acknowledgment of the nation’s progress.

Responding to this recognition, Kandeh Sesay, the Proprietor, Publisher, and Managing Editor of The Watch, expressed his gratitude during a telephone interview. “I felt extremely honored when I watched President Bio’s speech and heard him mention The Watch, especially for covering such an important milestone in Sierra Leone’s history,” Sesay said.

Sesay, revealed that his attendance at the MCC Compact signing ceremony was self-funded. Despite efforts to secure government support for his trip, he noted that no assistance was forthcoming. “It is rewarding to know that my reporting on the MCC Compact has been recognized and appreciated by President Bio,” he added.

Highlighting the significance of the MCC Compact, Sesay emphasized its transformative potential for Sierra Leone. “In a country where 70% of the population lacks access to electricity, this five-year, $480 million grant, along with a $14.2 million voluntary contribution from the Government of Sierra Leone, will fund critical energy sector investments. These investments aim to deliver affordable and reliable electricity to 4.6 million people,” Sesay explained.

Sesay reaffirmed his commitment to development journalism, stating, “I am dedicated to promoting Sierra Leone and projecting the country in a positive light. I urge all journalists to prioritize the nation’s interest while also holding the government accountable for any excesses.”

The MCC Compact is widely regarded as a milestone achievement for Sierra Leone, and The Watch newspaper’s coverage has further cemented its role in advancing positive national narratives.
