Cricket Sierra Leone (CSL) commenced its ICC Level 1 Coach Tutors course for 15 eligible candidates today, Wednesday, 19th February 2025, at the Sierra Leone Bank Complex, Kingtom, Freetown.
The candidates, drawn from the East, South, and Western Area, went through a careful selection process, with all having done some other courses, including those on the ICC Education App.
The training is being facilitated by two ICC master educators from South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Speaking at the opening on Wednesday, master educator Sylvester Mutusva (from Zimbabwe) said they are in Sierra Leone for the good of coaches. “We want you to come out of your shell. Bring out yourself, and build what you have,” he added.
Colleague trainer Jolene Dippenaar toed Mutusva’s line of thought, saying that being a coach is similar to being a parent.
Participant Linda Bull, a senior female cricketer, said she feels opportune and counts her part in the training as special. “We are here to learn and to implement what learn through a replication programme,” she said, outlining the importance of the course and how it will especially help boost women’s cricket.
CSL Board Chairman Francis Trevor Samura said CSL lacks the strength required under its training and education department to expand the base of trained and qualified coaches. “This is a training of trainers. When this course is completed, the coaches will have the authority to train others and give them ICC certificates,” he remarked.
In March this year, the 15 trainers will be co-opted to roll out a series of coaching courses around the country.
At present, Sierra Leone has over three hundred and eighty local coaches. The Management of CSL is looking forward to training a new crop of five hundred coaches, bringing the number close to one thousand.
