Freetown – President Julius Maada Bio is reportedly expecting a grandchild from his daughter, Agnes Bio, who is said to be heavily pregnant for Europe’s most wanted drug trafficker, Jos Leijdekkers.
Leijdekkers, a Dutch national, has been convicted in both the Netherlands and Belgium on multiple charges, including large-scale drug trafficking and murder. Despite an international warrant and mounting pressure from European authorities, he remains at large—allegedly finding safe haven in Sierra Leone.
Concerns continue to grow over the presence and influence of global drug barons within the country, with observers warning that Sierra Leone is rapidly becoming a hub for illicit narcotics operations. The presence of Jos Leijdekkers, in particular, has raised eyebrows, especially due to his rumored close ties with senior figures in the Bio-led administration.
The Netherlands government has formally requested Leijdekkers’ extradition. However, the Sierra Leone government has yet to act decisively, prompting accusations of selective justice and double standards. In a controversial statement, Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, revealed that Sierra Leone had requested the extradition of a political commentator, Adebayor, from the Netherlands—accusing him of inciting unrest during the August 10, 2022 protest.
Analysts say it is deeply troubling that while Sierra Leone vigorously pursues political critics abroad, it remains reluctant to extradite a convicted drug kingpin wanted by the EU. “This paints a worrying picture for the rule of law and our international credibility,” one political commentator noted.
The evolving relationship between Agnes Bio and Jos Leijdekkers has further complicated the situation. While the affair has remained largely private, the pregnancy and its political implications have now catapulted the matter into the public domain.
As the country awaits the birth of what could become the most controversial grandchild in Sierra Leone’s recent history, questions continue to swirl around the government’s commitment to justice, transparency, and international cooperation.
