Parliamentary Committee on Transport and Aviation, chaired by Hon. Ambrose Maada Lebby has concluded a four-day visitation to ministries, departments, and agencies of Government assigned to his Committee in light of their status reports including procurement plans, challenges and successes for the period under review.
Regarding the visitations, Hon. Ambrose Maada Lebby said they were performing their constitutional mandate to check and ascertain compliance with legal instruments and also spoke on the functions of Parliament relating to legislation, representation and oversight. He asked MDAs to put aside familiarity and push with determination to deliver on their duties for the development of the country. He also said that they should put politics aside with a view to delivering on the manifesto promises of President Bio.
Deputy Leader of Government Business, Hon. Bashiru Silikie spoke on the significance of parliamentary oversight and urged them to translate President Bio’s manifesto promises into reality.
For failing to treat the Committee with the seriousness its deserves relating to the production of documents, the Committee moved a motion that officials of SLRSA, its Board and supervisory ministry be summoned to Parliament for further deliberations.
After perusing their financial documents, the General Manager of SLRTC told the Committee that 30 brand new buses would arrive next year to alleviate transportation constraints across the country.
The Ministry of Transport and Aviation also briefed the Committee on its successes and challenges over the years.
At the Maritime Administration, the Committee observed that revenues generated are heavily spent on overhead costs, and also noticed payment discrepancies to internet service providers.
Overall, the Committee was not satisfied with documents presented and a conducted tour climaxed the oversight visit to a construction site at Sherbro Island in Bonthe District. The Committee observed that work has stopped at the construction site regardless of funds disbursed over the years.
The Committee promised to summon the Contractor to educate Parliament on the delays at the construction site.
