The Minister of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Austin H. Demby has participated in the in high-level roundtable discussions on how to reach a global commitment to invest in equitable and resilient health systems, based on a primary healthcare approach in an integrated way to achieve gains for both Global Health Security and Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
The World Health Summit was held in Berlin, Germany.
In his presentation, Dr. Demby underscores that His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio has placed Human Capital Development at the top of its development trajectory. In achieving that, Dr. Demby stated that, His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio has prioritized the education sector by allocation 22% of its annual budget in support of the Free and Quality Education in all government schools in the country. As a result of the quest of the government in improving the health sector, Dr. Demby further stated that, the government has also invested hugely in the health sector together with the Agriculture and infrastructure sector; mainly to ensure food sustainability and boost the tourism sector. He emphasized that the health sector is a key in the government agenda, therefore, His Excellency President has maintained a steady progress in the health sector. He echoed that currently the government has commenced the free vaccination exercise for children in the country. He lauded that the government has also championed the Safe Motherhood Bill, which he said, is in support of the health of all mothers in the country. He further highlights the school health policy which he describes as a laudable efforts of the government of Sierra Leone in promoting healthy learning environment. He stressed that the round table discussion is an opportunity for African countries to make change and tell their stories.
The Hon. Minister, will also participated in panel discussions on the topics: such as, Protect the Promise, Equal Access and Opportunity for Every Woman, Child and Adolescent. He is also expected to engage in several side meetings with bilateral partners.
