Technical & Higher Education Minister Participates in SASSCAL – WASCAL Ministerial conference

As a way of making education access to everyone irrespective of their social status, religion or family background, the Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Professor. Alpha Tejan Wurie has showcased the Free Quality Education program of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio during the West and Southern African Climate Change and Higher Education Ministerial Meeting.

The West and Southern African Climate Change and Higher Education Ministerial Meeting was held on 20th -23rd February 2023 in Berlin, Germany.

The Minister was warmly received by Dr. M’Bamaba Lamin Baryoh, Ambassador of the Republic of Sierra Leone to the Federal Republic of Germany and senior officials of the Embassy.

The learned Minister participated in high-level roundtable discussions with other ministers from West and Southern African Countries, responsible for climate change and higher education.

Making his statement, He called on the organizers to get a full documentary of the conference which would be shown to encourage other countries to participate. He assured the organizers of Sierra Leone’s full participation in future conferences.

The two days conference was organized under the invitation and auspices of the Federal German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). It is also part of the activities to climax the decade celebrations of the West African Science Service on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) and the Southern African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Management (SASSCAL).

Sierra Leone stands a lot to gain from WASCAL as it is one of the most affected countries by the effects of climate change. The conference discussed in detail steps to be taken to avert this looming catastrophe which is affecting the whole world.

The conference further discussed Nitrogen as a source of clean energy, into which much is now been invested.

Prof. Wurie actively took part in all of the discussions.

A joint declaration of intent was signed at the start of the three day conference.

The Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Professor. Alpha Tejan Wurie also engaged in several side meetings with bilateral counterparts on Education.
