AROUND AFRICA BRIEF MILITARY COUPS IN FRANCOPHONE AND LISOPHONE AFRICA…

ARE COLONIALISTS LOOSING CONTROL?

-ASK MOHAMED KAMARA

By Mohamed Kamara

Political Scientist have been basically asking so many questions as regards the escalading Military Coups in French African countries like Guinea has witnessed over three Military Coups, Mali is also on record for three or more Military Coups, Burkina Faso has the highest since Thomas Sankara was assassinated, Niger in West Africa followed suit and the latest in Africa is Central Africa’s Gabon.

The questions frequently ask. Is it that France is losing its holdings in French colonies in Africa?

Is it a question of constitutional disrespect? Are the Military not satisfied with the economics of their respective countries and blame it all on bad governance system? What can regional blocs do to discourage these tendencies? Do they have any off border influence?

Alpha Conde of Guinea got toppled when he insists in retraining power, Mali Military Rulers have signal a no go area for the French and cut off all relations with their former Colonia master, including others, in the Western hemisphere, they are troubled in the North by the Tuareg Rebels suspiciously supported by islamic insurgents, the same blame game has crossed the border to Burkina Faso blaming the Civilian government of ill-prepared to squash down the rebel insurgency and nobody cares to ask what has improved ever since, Niger say the Civilian ruler committed High Treason something many describe as fanatism, now, the ECOWAS bloc.

Gabon Military Coupists say they are ending a Bongo Family dynasty which started from Father to Son in 1967. Togo transition, from the Eyedama Family stems from Father to Son since independence in the 60’s Congo Brazzaville colonized by Belgium has the second longest serving President after French Cameroun’s Paul Biya, Central African Republic had the worst military mutiny during Jaen Bokesse, Paul Kigame of Rwanda colonised by Belgium took power in a Military Coup and subsequently joined the civilian race. Its neighbour Burundi has also experienced a Military Coup. Benin Republic seems peaceful but worried. Spain’s Guinea Equatorial has one of the worst brutal killings in the 70’s, Chad Republic is no stranger to Coups. Belgium’s democratic Republic of Congo saw a masterpiece which toppled Mobuto, Mauritania partly Magrels partly ECOWAS has had the experience too.

Senegal is the most peaceful of French colonies in Africa and has never experience a Military takeover except a rebel insurgency that limits its atrocities in the South of the country.

Lisephone countries in Africa namely Guinea Bissau and Mozambique are on record. Angola had a civilian uprising from the MPLA, FNLA and UNITA in the 70’s but the Angolan Liberation Popular Movement Translated in Portuguese as the movement to popular pour la liberation Angolano (MPLA) is most popular. The UNITAs leader Savimba was assassinated in his Southern hold. Roberto’s FNLA is not too much of an impact these decades, the Saharawi Republic bordering Morocco and Mauritania and colonised by Spain is the center for dispute between Algeria and Morocco over possession. What else can be done?
