Freetown, Sierra Leone – Africell, Sierra Leone’s leading telecommunications company, officially launched its third annual Freetown Marathon on Friday, November 15, 2024, with the aim of providing an exciting platform for citizens to showcase their athletic skills. The launch event took place at Africell’s headquarters on Pain Street, Wilberforce.

During the ceremony, Africell’s CEO and Managing Director, Mr. Shadi Gerjawi, highlighted the inclusive and family-friendly nature of the event. “What makes this event special is that it is a family affair. Even the dignitaries who attended were supposed to just launch the event, but they stayed on because they enjoyed the energy from the participants,” Gerjawi shared.

The CEO also reflected on the marathon’s growth over the years, emphasizing the importance of partnerships in their success. “When we started, we were not the best, but through collaboration with partners, we’ve come a long way,” Gerjawi explained. He also expressed Africell’s ongoing support for social causes, such as their long-standing partnership with Street Child, an organization they have supported for the past twelve years, notably during the Makeni Marathon.

Kamanda Koroma, Africell’s Marketing Communication Manager, reiterated the company’s commitment to fostering community health and wellness. “We want to make this year’s marathon bigger and better. Health and community engagement are at the heart of this event. We’ve increased the prizes by nearly 40% and encourage everyone to join through *227# via AfriMoney,” Koroma said. He assured the public that medical personnel would be available during the marathon to ensure the safety of all participants.

The event’s partners were also acknowledged for their contribution. Koroma thanked organizations such as the Sierra Leone Police, the military, the National Sports Authority, the Sierra Leone Athletics Association, and the Sierra Leone Sports Writers Association for their support.

Dalton Shyllon, Head of Media for the Sierra Leone Athletics Association, expressed excitement about the technical support they will provide for the marathon. “This is a great opportunity for Sierra Leonean athletes, as the winner may have the chance to represent the country on international platforms. We encourage all Sierra Leonean athletes to participate, as every contribution can help change a life,” Shyllon stated.

Sahr Morris Junior, President of the Sierra Leone Sports Writers Association, also encouraged sports journalists to cover the marathon. He noted that marathon coverage could open doors for journalists to participate in international events like the London Marathon.

The 2024 Freetown Marathon promises to be an exciting event, combining sports, community engagement, and health awareness. As Africell continues to support athletics in Sierra Leone, the company remains dedicated to providing opportunities for citizens to showcase their talents and promote wellness in the nation.
