Ask the U.S Consular Office Column

Questions and answers from readers

1. I secured a US visa with my wife and she traveled to the US while I was waiting for my leave to be approved to join her on vacation, however, my leave was not approved. I ask her to return she told me she has moved on with her life and she has someone else.

Would this affect my visa if I want to visit the US in the future?

You will need to explain your situation to the Consular Officer during your interview. You should be ready to provide proof that your relationship has ended, such as your divorce certificate, or a new marriage certificate.

2. I entered the portal to secure an appointment date but later realized that my email address was wrong. The system instructed me to attach my passport so they would reset my portal. I have tried but to no avail.
Can I send my bank payment receipt and you give me a date for the interview, am a very old woman now. I listen to your program.
Unfortunately, you must schedule the appointment through the portal. If you need help resetting your portal you can call Local number: + 232 79999899, US callers: +17035202576 and Email: support-sierraleone@usatraveldocs.com.

3. My B1/B2 Visa was canceled at the port, and my girlfriend wants to file for a K1 visa, what are my chances of getting the visa?

If your visa was cancelled at the port of entry, it will be difficult for you to receive a new B1/B2 visa. It means the agent at the port thought you were not going to use your visa correctly. You will need to explain to the Consular Officer how your circumstances have changed from when your first visa was cancelled.

6. I was refused a visitor visa in March 2023 based on section 214b, I want to reapply in July what are my chances?

You will need to be able to explain to the Consular Officer how your circumstances have changed from your previous refusal. It is very difficult for an applicant to have significant changes in only 4 months. Thus you are unlikely to qualify, but every case is different. We cannot guarantee the results either way.

7. I filled out the DS-160 and submitted it, I want to print the confirmation page late, but I forget my login credentials, can I file out a new DS-160 form?

If you file a new DS-160 you will need to pay a new visa fee. Instead, you should contact the portal operators directly at: Local number: + 232 79999899, US callers: +17035202576, Email: support: support-sierraleone@usatraveldocs.com.

8. My kids have US visas, and I want to send them on vacation for two months they will return before schools reopen in September, would they have an issue at the port of entry because I would not accompany them?
As long as your kids have valid U.S. visas and a letter of consent from both parents, they should not have issues at the port of entry. We cannot guarantee a decision one way or another; the final decision is made by the officer at the port of entry.

9. I was issued a visa to attend a conference in the US but it is not a B1 visa, I want to go on vacation now. Am I qualified for the interview waiver?
The interview waiver only applies to B, F, and M visas. You must be applying for the same class of visa as the original one.
