Commemorating its First Anniversary, NDMA Reaffirms Commitment to Preventing and Mitigating National Disasters

On November 19, 2020, His Excellency, Brig. Rtd. Dr Julius Maada Bio launched the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), the Agency has ever since, strived to prevent and mitigate emerging disasters in the country.

Director-General, NDMA, Lt. General (Rtd.) Brima Bureh Sesay said, “The Agency is moving towards hazard mapping, vulnerability and capacity assessment, coordination and building knowledge in solving the existential risk that our country faces today”.

One year in existence, the focus remains to lead Sierra Leone to prepare for, prevent, respond to and recover from disasters with a vision of national preparedness.

The Director-General added, “We endeavour to promote a national resolve to alleviate the damage and destruction caused by natural and man-made disasters in the country. Over our one year in existence, we have addressed issues of floods, fire outbreaks, landslides, flash floods and windstorms throughout the country”.

He reiterated that “Disaster knows no boundary, no tribe when it strikes; that is why people should support the work of the agency by adhering to the pieces of advice that we continue to put out”.

Deputy Director-General, John Vandy Rogers, said “As we commemorate our first anniversary, I am pleased to extend a happy celebration to all members of staff and valuable volunteers who have contributed in no small measure towards the successes made over the year.”

The DDG extolled the sound leadership of the Agency: “I wish to appreciate the good leadership provided by the DG and the oversight role played by the office of the Chief Minister”.

The National Disaster Management Agency – separated from the Office of National Security (ONS) in 2020, the phenomenal transition gave the Agency the responsibility to manage national disasters and similar emergencies throughout Sierra Leone.

NDMA continues to develop the capacity of communities to effectively respond to disasters, empowering community volunteers to help identify risks and report.

The National Disaster Management Agency has responded, since its inception, to 19149 victims in 3894 households. The Agency has provided relief support to 428 affected homes in the Western Urban, 70 in Falaba, 254 in Kailahun, 109 in Kambia, 12 in Karene, 40 in Kono, 8 in Moyamba, 72 in Port Loko, 33 in Bombali, 37 in Pujuhun, Eight in Moyamba and two in the Western Rural area.
