DIASPORA PRAISES PRESIDENT BIO AND INFORMATION MINISTER FOR SUCCESSFUL TOWN HALL DIALOGUE

By Michelle Bonnie

Sierra Leonean citizens in the diaspora have lauded President Julius Maada Bio and Minister of Information and Civic Education, Mr. Chernor Abdulai Bah, for the successful handling of the July 23rd, 2024, town hall dialogue. During this event, held at the Bintumani Hotel, President Bio highlighted his administration’s achievements over the past 12 months, addressing various national issues.

James Ezekiel Thompson, a Sierra Leonean working at the Old Age Center for Rehabilitation in South Wales, Australia, commended Minister Bah for his exceptional presentation skills. Thompson noted that Bah, with his background as a civil society advocate, exhibited the qualities of a seasoned journalist, creating an engaging and informative atmosphere. He praised Bah for his straightforward questions, which helped convey President Bio’s messages clearly to both in-person attendees and those watching via television and social media.

Thompson highlighted that since Bah’s appointment as Minister, he has consistently aimed to ensure citizens are well-informed and engaged in the governance process. This commitment to transparency and accountability aligns with President Bio’s promises to the nation. Bah’s transformation of the usual press briefings into globally televised events has attracted significant attention, drawing more journalists and providing ample accommodation for participants. Importantly, Bah’s use of the widely spoken Creole vernacular made the information accessible to 98.5% of Sierra Leoneans.

Jeneba Abdulai Turker, a student at the University of Toronto in Canada, emphasized Bah’s initiative to combat misinformation and disinformation about President Bio’s governance. Turker noted that true democracy should be visible in action, not just rhetoric. She praised Bah’s enthusiasm and President Bio’s demonstration of leadership, which distinguishes the collective judgment about the common good from individual desires. Turker highlighted that President Bio has shown the importance of citizens adhering to laws and regulations that serve the general good, ensuring equality, justice, and unity for all.

Turker also noted that President Bio has illustrated the need for broad economic conditions to prevent factional disputes that could undermine public trust. She appreciated Bah’s creation of a platform that has been much needed, securing his place in the performance contract for his efforts.

This town hall dialogue has been a significant step in fostering informed citizen participation and strengthening Sierra Leone’s democratic governance.
