Swab Sesay, formerly a driver to the Deputy Regional Chairman of the APC in Sierra Leone, recounts the harrowing events of June 7th, 2023, when political tensions led to violence and his subsequent flight from his homeland.On that day, Swab and his boss traveled to Kenema for an APC campaign, only to encounter a violent ambush by SLPP supporters. Amidst chaos and injuries, Swab was forcibly taken from his boss’s home by a vigilante group and later imprisoned on false charges of murder.
After enduring months of suffering in confinement, Swab seized an opportunity to escape when the prison was breached. Swab’s story underscores the challenges faced by political dissenters in Sierra Leone and the lengths they must go to in search of freedom and security.
