Freetown – George Browne, one of the inmates who escaped during the failed November 26 coup attempt, appeared again before the court on Monday, April 7, 2025, after allegedly stabbing a man in the face.
Browne, a convicted prisoner previously jailed at Pademba Road for stabbing his uncle, is now facing two charges: wounding and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, contrary to the laws of Sierra Leone.
According to court documents, the alleged incident occurred on Friday, March 14, 2025, at Kroo Town Road, where Browne is accused of maliciously stabbing Mohamed Alie Bah below his left eye and inflicting serious harm.
Testifying before Magistrate Santigie Bangura at the Pademba Road Magistrate Court No. 2, the complainant, Mohamed Alie Bah, said he knew Browne through his brother, Ibrahim Bah. He recounted that on the date in question, his brother had entrusted Browne with Le7,000 to deliver to someone, but the accused vanished.
After a brief search, Bah said they found Browne on Adelaide Street, apparently flaunting new mobile phones, a watch, clothes, and the missing cash. He said he apprehended Browne and turned him over to the Adelaide Street Police, where the items were handed over in connection with the money allegedly misappropriated.
Bah claimed that the next day, Browne came to his home demanding the return of his belongings. When told to go to the police, Browne allegedly threatened to kill him. Later that day, at a container belonging to one Abdulai, Bah was stabbed in the face. “He stabbed me below my left eye and ran away,” Bah told the court. He was rushed to Connaught Hospital for treatment and later provided a medical report to the police.
Browne, who is representing himself in court, cross-examined the witness but was denied bail due to the severity of the offense. Magistrate Bangura ordered that he be remanded at the Male Correctional Centre in Freetown.
The matter was adjourned to April 15, 2025, for further proceedings.
