In the first year of his stewardship as the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Ambrose Michael Sovula has reduced the national crime rates from 75,729 to 63,411.
This development according to analysts is a clear indication that the decision of His Excellency, the President, Rtd Brig Julius Maada Bio to appointment Dr Ambrose Michael Sovula as the Police Chief was a right step in the right direction.
“His leadership styles is worth emulating, a year down the line after his appointment as the Sheriff of the State, he has been able to bring down the crime rates in all Regions, Districts, towns and communities,” said citizens adding that such development can only be achieved through a competent leader who has the required knowledge and experience.
Few months after taking up the mantle of the SLP, as the Inspector General, he did not only introduce new policing methods like the management by walking about, establishment of memorandum with key partners but also priotise the welfare of all police officers.
His new strategies, couple with the motivational moves in the SLP has started yielding fruit to the satisfaction of government and the benefit of all.
“I’m coming in to bring the SLP to the door steps of every citizen to make it people centered police, by so doing, we can get their full corporation and the police-public trust can be restore” said the IGP shortly after his approval at the well of Parliament.
According to the report, the total offences recorded in 2020 was 63,411 as against the 75,729 which was recorded in 2019.
The report further that with the exception of sexual and gender base violence and road traffic offences, all other sector recorded lower figures of offence.
The decrease in offences include, offences against the person in 2020 was 19,048 as against the 23,691 recorded in 2019, offences against property in 2020 was 15,926 as against the 18,861 recorded in 2019, sexual and gender base offences recorded in 2020 was 12, 830 while 12,314 was recorded in 2019, Economic offences dropped from 8,145 in 2019 to 7786 in 2020, mischief and public order offences dropped from 2,916 in 2019 to 2,407 in 2020, miscellaneous offences dropped from 1,659 to 1,077 in 2020, road traffic offences increase from 3,691 in 2019 to 4,337 in 2020 and there was no record of motor traffic regulations offence for) 2020.
According to the report, the increase in sexual and gender base offences recorded is as a result of the awareness on the 2020 sexual offences Act which is now prompting community and society members to come forward and report such matters.
“Before now, people were not reporting sexual and gender base offences to the police, even though it was on the increase” said a senior female police officer.
