Indian Businessman Granted Le 1.5M Bail in Larceny Case

By Mamajah Jalloh

Freetown – Indian businessman Rohit Ramchandani, aged 42, made his first appearance at Pademba Road Court No. 1 on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, facing charges of larceny by servant. Ramchandani is accused of stealing Le 1,280,600 (One Million, Two Hundred and Eighty Thousand, Six Hundred Leones) from J. B Enterprise Limited, where he was employed as a salesman.

According to the police charge sheet, the alleged theft took place between October 15, 2023, and January 20, 2025, at the company’s location, 555 Waterloo in the Western Rural District of Sierra Leone. The stolen sum, reportedly taken from J. B Enterprise, was under the ownership of Ahmad Habib Bayoh, the operator of the business.

When the charges were read to the accused, no plea was entered. Deputy Superintendent of Police Sorie Conteh, representing the prosecution, informed the court that some witnesses were unavailable, which led to a delay in progressing with the case. However, the prosecution did not object to bail.

Ramchandani, who was not represented by legal counsel during the hearing, was granted bail in the amount of Le 1,500,000. The bail conditions specify that he must provide responsible citizens residing in Freetown as sureties. The bail is subject to approval by the Deputy Assistant Registrar.

The case has been adjourned to March 12, 2025, for further proceedings, where it is expected that more developments will unfold.
