In a bid to enhance Government’s policy actions on improved accountability and transparency, the Honorable Vice President today Tuesday 6th July hit the ground running when he presided over the inaugural meeting of the newly formed Accountability Platform.
The platform brings together Parliament, Auditor General’s Office, Anti-Corruption Commission, Public Procurement Authority, and Ministry of Finance to take high level strategic decisions on strengthening the accountability space in Sierra Leone. The goal of this initiative is to improve citizens’ trust in government through efficiency gains in delivery of essential services and reduction of wastages.
This initiative also seeks to consolidate the gains on the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Scorecard and other International Benchmarks. It will challenge the current accountability architecture by promoting collaboration and cooperation amongst the key stakeholders to take bold actions to ensure value for money in Government activities. It will deepen the interactions amongst these stakeholders to ensure a more holistic and comprehensive engagement on improving service delivery by identifying the inefficiency and leakages and putting strategies in place to address them. It is anticipated that this initiative will also serve to mutually reinforce the need to support the independence of these entities to sustainably improve service delivery.
“Embedding accountability and transparency in every aspect of Government business is the bedrock of the social contract between the Government and its citizens,” said the Vice President during his opening statement. He also noted that this initiative is an essential part of His Excellency, President Julius Maada Bio’s efforts to implant accountability and transparency within the government’s delivery apparatus.
