Over 1000 Pilgrims Will Not Vote June 24 Elections

The head of communication at the Electoral Commission Sierra Leone on Thursday February 2nd, 2023, at the usual press briefing organized by the Ministry of Information and Communication has informed that over 1000 pilgrims who will journey to the Holy Land of Mecca before the multitier elections in June 24 2023, will not be given the privilege to vote before departure.

Mr. George said it is simply not constituted in our constitution that special privileges should be accorded to voters who fall in such circumstances. He added that, it is even unwise to do so for people to vote before the official date. He informed that indeed an approach was made in protocol through the office of the Attorney General but as earlier said does not constitute any privilege that should be given to any set of people because of religious reasons.

The Communication Officer noted that, primary motive of the ECSL is to conduct a free and fair election, adding that, even foreign observers are free to interact with them and even raise questions if there is any. He said the Commission is convinced that all volunteers will go through the appropriate training programmes as all logistics to be used in the process are in good shape. He said over three million voters are expected to cast their votes in June 24 2023.
