Rainy Season Causes Feeder Road Disruptions, Resulting in Increased Transport Costs

By Mohamed Kamara

Freetown, Sierra Leone — September 2, 2024 — Residents of the city’s feeder road network are facing severe disruptions due to the torrential rains that have split major roads and created hazardous conditions. This situation has led to a significant increase in transportation costs, straining the daily budgets of thousands of inhabitants.

Reports from the affected areas reveal that the once-navigable feeder roads have been severely damaged, leading to deep puddles, debris, and impassable sections. As a result, residents are now required to pay more than the usual fare to navigate these treacherous routes, with minimum fares now reaching NL 10. For those unable to afford the increased fare, the alternative is to walk long distances, often in harsh weather conditions, exacerbating their difficulties.

The East Central and West regions of the capital are particularly hard-hit. Pregnant women, new mothers, children, the elderly, and the sick are among the most affected by the deteriorating road conditions. The increased cost of transportation has led to a rise in the prices of essential goods, further straining household budgets. Additionally, residents in hilly areas face treacherous paths, with some homes having to erect temporary barriers to protect against potential flooding.

In an interview, a Sierra Leone Road Authority (SLRA) engineer (name withheld) acknowledged the severity of the situation. He confirmed that the damaged roads have been prioritized for repair, but progress is contingent upon donor funding, which can be delayed. The engineer explained that while numerous contractors are available, funding must be secured before work can commence. Currently, government resources are focused on feeder roads in the provinces, which are crucial for supporting the “Feed Salone Project,” leaving limited funds for repairs in the capital.

The SLRA engineer urged the affected residents to exercise patience as the road repairs are a top priority. “We understand the difficulties faced by residents and are working diligently to address the issue as quickly as possible,” he said.

As the rainy season continues, the plight of those living along the city’s feeder roads highlights the urgent need for timely infrastructure maintenance and repair to mitigate the impact of adverse weather conditions on daily life.
