RUMORS OF TROUBLE LOOM AS PRESIDENT BIO VOWS TO TACKLE LAWLESSNESS

By Mohamed Kamara

In a recent Ministerial retreat held in Bo, President Bio declared his government’s commitment to combat all forms of lawlessness, warning that those resorting to violence will face a stern response. He emphasized that the same patience he exercised before winning elections is expected of all politicians in Sierra Leone.

Julius Kpaka, an activist of the SLPP party, expressed concerns that President Bio is growing increasingly impatient with threats to his governance. He cited incidents dating back to the pre and post-election period of June 24, 2023, as triggers for this stance.

Madam Mariama Taylor, APC Chairlady in the East district of the Western area, attributed the ongoing threats to the APC’s belief that the election was neither free nor fair. Meanwhile, Julian Cole, a Political Science student at Fourah Bay College, highlighted the constitutional provision for petitions against election outcomes.

Abu Koroma, a trader at Abacha Street, suggested that rumors of a potential re-run of the elections persisted until the U.S. Ambassador’s announcement of the Tripatriate Committee, which aimed to address electoral concerns.

Ibrahim Kolleh, a civil servant, expressed apprehension regarding President Bio’s response to the Tripatriate Committee’s expected recommendations on June 19. He feared the President might reject any unfavorable recommendations, given prior rumors of disobedience.

Morlai Kanu of Rogbeangba observed that the political landscape in Sierra Leone often leads to irreconcilable differences between the SLPP and APC parties. He called for the PPRC to intervene and suspend any party found inciting violence or displaying irresponsible behavior.
