Sierra Leone Allegedly Linked to $77,000 Drug Shipment Seized by Liberia

The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) and Joint Security forces recently intercepted a large drug shipment worth over $77,000 USD in Foya District, Lofa County. The seizure has raised new concerns regarding Sierra Leone’s role in the regional drug trade.

Around 10:45 PM, the LDEA received a tip-off about a black pickup truck with the Liberian license plate A533348, believed to be transporting narcotics. The truck was en route from Sierra Leone to Monrovia.

Upon stopping the vehicle, authorities questioned the driver, 43-year-old Fayiah Lamie, a Monrovia resident, who initially claimed he was only carrying clothes and slippers. However, a thorough search led to the discovery of 772 plates of high-grade marijuana, valued at approximately $77,200 USD (about 14.6 million Liberian dollars). Authorities also found eight boxes of Tramadol, worth $842 USD (160,000 Liberian dollars).

The LDEA has vowed to continue its fight against drug trafficking in Liberia, stating that further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.

Reports have raised concerns about Sierra Leone being a significant hub for drug trafficking, with allegations that high-profile drug lords, including those wanted by the European Union, are reportedly operating under the protection of the Sierra Leone government.
