Sierra Leone Drivers Union Elections Set For July 23

By Mohamed Kamara

The Sierra Leone Drivers Union is preparing for elections on July 23, 2024, to choose a successor to Mr. Alpha Bah, who has served the Council for over three decades. With a membership reportedly exceeding one million, the union has attracted interest from candidates in both the South and Western Rural Districts.

While the election venue has yet to be announced, reports indicate two contenders are vying for leadership positions, with Mr. Bah endorsing his preferred successor and actively mediating discussions for the presidency and vice presidency. According to Mr. Bah, ethnicity plays no role in his recommendation; rather, he prioritizes leadership capabilities to steer the union in the right direction.

In interviews with a diverse group of transport drivers, concerns were raised about the union’s executive leadership failing to adequately shield them from police harassment and unjust fines leading to legal proceedings. Drivers expressed frustration that provincial representatives often collaborate with local police rather than advocating for their rights.

Responding to these allegations, outgoing President Mr. Alpha Bah acknowledged some of the drivers’ grievances but also attributed responsibility to drivers themselves. He cited instances where drivers were penalized for infractions such as driving without a license, expired insurance, faulty tires, overloading, parking violations, or misconduct towards authorities. He emphasized the need for constructive dialogue to address these issues promptly.
