Six Accused in Alleged Murder of James Conteh Appear in Court

Freetown, Sierra Leone – Six individuals, including Hassan Kamara, Brima Kamara, Brima Tarawallie, Abu Barkarr Kamara, Samuel Turay, and Fatimata Turay, appeared before Magistrate Sahr Kekura at the Pademba Road Court No. 1 on Monday, September 9, 2024. The accused are facing charges related to the alleged murder of James Conteh.

The prosecution alleges that the six defendants conspired with an unknown individual to commit murder at the Ascension Town Cemetery in Freetown on March 1, 2024. They are charged with conspiracy to commit murder, contrary to Section 4 of the Offences Against the Person Act of 1861, as repealed and replaced by Section 1(a) of the Abolition of the Death Penalty Act, 2021.

According to court documents, the accused are alleged to have conspired to kill Conteh at the cemetery. The second prosecution witness, Detective Inspector Alusine Conteh, who is attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), testified that on March 4, 2024, he received a case file from the Civil Crime Investigation Unit.

Inspector Conteh further stated that the second and third accused were questioned in Krio, and their statements were translated into English. Both defendants allegedly admitted to the charges, placing their thumbprints on the documents to confirm their statements.

The case has been adjourned to September 13, 2024, for further hearings.
