For the first time in the sporting history of Sierra Leone, His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio has appointed a female by the name of Augusta James Taema as the Sports Minister Designate.
Despite her political connections, Augusta has been active in the Sierra Leone Athletic Association for 15 years. It is believed that she knows the in and out of sports.
Some Sport Analysts are very optimistic that Augusta James Taema will deliver in transforming the Ministry of Sports to an enviable entity if the level playing field is created for her to administer well. These Sports Analysts further affirmed that madam Augusta James Taema is a seasoned administrator that believes in results and does not entertain lackadaisical attitude.
Recalling during the regime of Madam Isha Johansen as President of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), there were lots of infighting in the football administration. Many people also admired her administration as she was able to conquer the infighting and the many controversies. Some would say that Madam Johansen was able to surmount the many challenges during her regime due to the support she received from her husband who is a business tycoon and owner of the Cement Factory (LEOCOM). Isha was seen by her male counterparts as a disciplinarian who does not easily compromise to their teste. Her tenure was full lots of upheavals and allegations of fraud. Fortunately, she was discharged and acquitted of all charges. She gave up her position by refusing to contest for a second term and is now an Executive Member of the world governing body of sports (FIFA).
Many sports lovers are worried that just like Madam Johansen, Madam Augusta James Taema will face similar challenges. Although many of those who were at the forefront of plotting against Isha Johansen have changed positions, few dead, others roaming behind clubs for possible appointments, but Madam Augusta James Taema must be careful of those that are going closer to her. For 2023, Sierra Leone face many challenges having lost the chance of qualifying for the 2023 African Cup of nations. The success of the Ministry of Sports depends on transparency, accountability, cooperation and unity amongst SLFA, Sports Ministry and Local Clubs.
