Freetown, Sierra Leone – Madam Ndaye Fatu Koroma, the Country Representative of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), has clarified that the $480 million allocated to Sierra Leone for winning the MCC scorecard will not be directly managed by the government treasury. Instead, these funds will be regulated by the MCC’s home office to ensure compliance, effectiveness, efficiency, and transparency.
Speaking at a press briefing hosted by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Madam Koroma emphasized the importance of adhering to MCC regulations. She highlighted that the funding was granted in recognition of the significant progress made by the Sierra Leone government in meeting MCC criteria.
A primary focus of the MCC funds will be the development of the energy sector. Madam Koroma stated that technical challenges will be addressed by experts to enhance self-sufficiency through increased megawatt capacity and reliable, affordable electricity for all households.
Contractors and subcontractors involved in the implementation process will undergo a rigorous vetting process to ensure their suitability. Structural transformations are necessary to achieve the project goals within the five-year timeline. While Sierra Leone could have requested additional funds, this initial phase will be evaluated for its success and potential for future opportunities.
Madam Koroma urged Sierra Leoneans to take advantage of this opportunity by acting judiciously and responsibly, noting the competitive nature of the selection process and the privilege granted to Sierra Leone. She stressed the importance of fulfilling the criteria to pave the way for future funding opportunities.
“We must remember that many countries vied for this opportunity, but Sierra Leone was chosen. It is now up to us to make the most of this chance and ensure we do not squander it,” she said.
The MCC’s stringent oversight aims to ensure that the funds are used effectively to drive sustainable development and improve the quality of life for all Sierra Leoneans.
