Transport Minister Delegates Functions to Agencies under Performance Contract

Mohamed Kamara

In response to President Bio’s performance contract for 2024, Minister of Transport and Aviation, Ambassador Fanday Turay Esq., has held meetings with the Managing Directors of the agencies supervised by his ministry. These agencies include the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbour Authority (SLPHA), the Sierra Leone Road Authority (SLRA), the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA), the Maritime Administration, and the Civil Aviation Authority.

In an interview, Minister Turay stated that he has delegated specific responsibilities to each agency head as outlined in the performance contract. He emphasized that his role will now be focused on monitoring and supervising to ensure effective implementation. Turay noted that the performance contract is a collective responsibility, requiring significant sacrifice and commitment from all involved. To ensure compliance, a team from the Ministry of Transport and Aviation will visit all agencies under its supervision to verify the commencement of work.

The Minister also highlighted the commitment of the Ports and Harbour Authority to improving their operations, mirroring the dedication seen in other agencies. He stressed that President Bio places significant importance on enhancing all sectors related to the Ministry of Transport and Aviation. A final meeting with the agencies is scheduled for November 2024, where the Minister expects to receive reports on their achievements. These reports will contribute to the progress report he will present to the President in December.

Minister Turay further mentioned that the World Bank’s $74 million funding will support the construction of additional feeder roads and bridges, facilitating farmers’ access to markets. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance the transportation infrastructure and support economic growth in Sierra Leone.
