Sierra Leonean Students Stranded in Sudan

More than eighty Sierra Leoneans students who are pursuing both their undergraduate and postgraduate courses on government scholarships are currently stranded in Sudan.

These students are part of those that were awarded scholarship in the previous government led by the former government.

This came about when the Revolutionary Council of Sudan which succeeded the Decades Old Government of Omar al- Bashir in Sudan announced to all foreigners including Sierra Leonean students that their government withheld their fees unless they pay their annual fees of three thousand dollars (USD 3000) before they are allowed to pursue their courses.

Dr. Robert Kargbo has disclosed that this announcement has affected more than eighty Sierra Leoneans university students who are doing their undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Mr. Kargbo went on to say that this incident has affected more than thirty foreigners studying in Sudan in both Islamic and English Language Studies. He said that the new regime led by His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio has insisted that it will curb down expenditures on scholarship awarded to Sierra Leoneans. Dr. Kargbo lamented that the students will have no other alternative but either to abandon their courses and return home or seek refuge in another country to pursue their courses.

He added that in Sudan, there are no opportunities for foreign students to seek part-time employments for foreign students unless they lobby through International Organizations.
